Past

Taos Pueblo has been a living, enduring community for more generations than recorded history holds. Its traditions, ceremonies, and governance structures have continued without interruption — shaped by a deep understanding of this land and an equally deep commitment to the people who call it home.

Over the centuries, the Pueblo has met every challenge to its continuity with strategy and purpose. When federal policy sought to restructure tribal governance in the 1930s, Taos Pueblo declined — and the federal government accepted that decision. That outcome became a reference point for Indigenous self-determination across the country.

In 1970, after 64 years of testimony, policy work, and sustained relationship-building, Congress returned 48,000 acres of sacred land — including Blue Lake — to the Pueblo. It was one of the most significant land reclamations in modern history, and it demonstrated what a community grounded in its own values can achieve through policy and principle.

In 1992, UNESCO designated Taos Pueblo a World Heritage Site - the first such recognition of a living Indigenous community for the continuity of its cultural, ceremonial, and governance traditions. The Taos Pueblo Foundation carries that record forward.

In 2010, the Abeyta Water Rights Settlement established Taos Pueblo as a co-equal authority in regional water governance — alongside state and federal agencies. It was the result of decades of negotiation, and it became a national model for how Indigenous nations assert authority within complex legal systems. The Taos Pueblo Foundation carries that tradition forward.

Present

Established a decade ago, the Taos Pueblo Foundation is entering its nexts chapter. We develop policy frameworks, deploy capital strategically, and build the infrastructure — physical, economic, cultural, and civic — that carries a community forward with the discipline and vision the moment demands. Working in close partnership with Taos Pueblo governance and the broader community, the Foundation identifies and funds the highest-impact investments in the region.

Future

The generations ahead will inherit a region shaped by the decisions made now. Working in close partnership with Taos Pueblo governance and community, the Taos Pueblo Foundation is building a pipeline of investments designed to position Taos Pueblo as a model for the world — and to open greater opportunity for every generation that follows.

Health

Holistic Health

01
Personal

Taos Pueblo people live well across every stage of life. The community maintains health outcomes that exceed the national average, and every person has access to safe housing, food security, and reliable, high-quality health care.

02
Social

Taos Pueblo is a community where people know each other and look after one another. Civic life is active and accessible — gathering spaces, recreational opportunities, and cultural activities are woven into daily life, with particular care given to the youngest and oldest members of the community.

03
Cultural

The traditions of Taos Pueblo are passed on to each new generation as vibrant, living beliefs, practices, and customs. The history of the Pueblo is preserved, its historic dwellings and significant artifacts protected for current and future generations.

04
Economic

People in Taos Pueblo have real economic opportunity — good work, strong businesses, and an education that opens doors. The community is building a Pueblo based economy, with the infrastructure to support it and outcomes that are among the best in the country.

05
Environmental

The land that Taos Pueblo occupies and the other beings whose space the Pueblo shares are respected and protected. The relationship between the people and the land is one of belonging — the Pueblo is part of the land, and the land is part of the Pueblo. This understanding shapes everything: how resources are managed, how decisions are made, and what it means to care for a place across generations. The Pueblo has quality infrastructure and environmental services that protect and support the wellbeing of its people and the land they are part of.

05 — Stewardship

Capital in the right hands.

The Taos Pueblo Foundation brings to this work what cannot be built overnight — a continuous institution with deep roots in this land, an unbroken record of governance, and a community it has always answered to.

The philanthropic world now recognizes recognizing something that has long been true: that the most effective stewards of capital are the communities closest to the work. Capital in the hands of an institution that thinks in generations, builds for the long term, and has spent centuries demonstrating what it does with responsibility and trust. That is what the Taos Pueblo Foundation represents — and why the work we do with resources entrusted to us will matter long after the moment they were given.

The Blue Lake restoration — a decades-long campaign that reshaped federal policy — demonstrates what Taos Pueblo governance achieves when it commits to a goal.
The Taos Pueblo Foundation is raising $10 million over the next decade, 100% directed to measurable regional impact — underwritten by institutional sponsors so every dollar of your investment reaches its purpose.
As a place-based foundation grounded in community governance, the Taos Pueblo Foundation invests in what the community has determined matters most — not what external institutions decide on its behalf.
